
Payne County Sheriff’s Office Target of Ransomware Attack
(Tuesday, June 3, 2025) - The Payne County Sheriff’s Office has been the target of a ransomware attack. The FBI is currently conducting a criminal investigation into the incident.
Out of an abundance of caution, we suggest that anyone who has filed a report with the Payne County Sheriff’s Office prior to May 15, 2025, take these precautions:
- Monitor banking accounts and check credit reports
- Get with credit/debit card companies to issue a fraud alert
- Change passwords to personal accounts
- Take additional authentication measures in all personal accounts and applications

The cyberattack has had no impact on the office’s critical function of providing public safety services to the residents of Payne County. The process of restoring the internal IT system at the Payne County Sheriff’s Office continues.
